Public art in East Los Angeles Jennifer O

 



                                    Phase 1 : Site


I grew up living in East LA and Boyle Heights , but mostly East LA .These neighborhoods had been a big part of me. My parents would always take me and my siblings to the movie theaters in East La while growing up and the parks too . I went to high school in East La and my siblings went to school around East La too . East La has a lot of public Art specifically in Whittier boulevard. Which is where these famous cars called lowrides or oldies cars are cruising around there going between the street where this famous logo of the street called Whittier Boulevard. Also a lot of people go to Whittier Boulevard and celebrate the Dodgers or Mexico games .People show a lot of pride and culture in East Los by selling food or drinks, desert, clothes , and cultural items . East Los Angeles has a lot of history, which artists used that history to paint murals.


                         Phase 2:  Field Work



Our Lady of Guadalupe,” David Lopez, 1973, Old Casa Maravilla Wall.  It was originally painted in the old Casa Maravilla wall , but then got demolished and moved to 4800 Cesar E. Chavez Ave. at Mednik Avenue, East Los Angeles. They respect Chicano culture and religion .The mural was supported by Summer  youth programs and community members .The mural is made of paint and a bit of titles .

                   


Whittier Boulevard famous arch is located at 4629  Whittier Blvd, East Los Angeles,CA90022 .The Whittier Boulevard Arch is made of Metal .It was a community project built in 1986 to represent pride and culture .


           


Jose Antonio Aguirre’s ceramic mural with titles  “Journey to Knowledge” was intended to inspire students at the Hilda L. Solis Learning Academy when it was installed in 2013


                    PHASE 3: CRITICAL ANALYSIS


                                       



             Whittier Boulevard is a historical landmark for people in East Los Angeles . The history behind the landmark is that it was used during the Chicano  movement . Activists would walk from San Francisco or San Diego to  East Los Angeles through the Whittier Boulevard  shopping center and fight for Latino rights and also stop the Vietnam War machine  protesters would start a riot and police would throw gas by trying to stop it . The arch was funded by the Whittier Boulevard Merchants Association in 1984. The boulevard has served a purpose of pride and cultural significance for the people . It was built January 18,1986.


The Our Lady of Guadalupe by David Lopez , Old casa Maravilla Wall represent the Chicano community and religions. The image on the paint shows a religious image of Virgin Mary. Which represents hope and Faith .It was funded by the Los Angeles County Development Commission in order to restore the mural . The mural first was designed by David Lopez and local teens.


Jose Antonio Aguirre’s ceramic mural Journey to Knowledge represents the East Los Angeles community and indigenous culture. The symbol that the mural has means indigenous culture . It has an Aztec sun god . The mural was funded by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) for the Hilda L. Solis Learning Academy. The mural also has a meaning about education and cultural identity .




Phase 4: PROPOSAL 
East LA has always been a community of culture , love and pride . I love seeing my community always working hard by selling stuff in the streets . It shows how Latinos are always hard workers and determined to do anything they want . I love seeing the art in the walls and seeing the lowriders cruise by .I really like  trying new food from vendors and supporting the local vendors:Something that I dislike about my community is how there is sometimes violence and gangs around . So sometimes it is scary and unsafe to go outside .Something else I dislike is how ICE attacks community members .

Silverlake is where I see more diverse artists displaying art pieces that can be political, historical or cultural. People that view the public art from different cultural backgrounds can have completely different understanding of the art price that even the artist may not have thought of. Glendale Beautification Process Cameron Valdecantos Art 3170-01 Introduction Phase 1 - The Site The place that I chose for siting is around Glendale because, anywhere I go, it is always the best place to go. This is a place where I usually live around growing up. I even want to try exploring new things I haven't seen before, like the artworks.
