Discovering Beauty Within Silver Lake and Echo Park.
PHASE 1: THE SITE - Silver Lake / Echo Park
Silver Lake and Echo Park is home to various forms of public art. Silverlake is where I see more diverse artists displaying art pieces that can be political, historical or cultural. People that view the public art from different cultural backgrounds can have completely different understanding of the art price that even the artist may not have thought of. This is why I chose the Silver Lake area.
PHASE 2: FIELD WORK
Artist Shepard Fairey.
This piece created by Shepard Fairey incorporated many different pieces of his own into one whole mural on the corner of Silver Lake and Hyperion Ave. In the Defend Dignity piece Shepard incorporated a woman named Maribel Valdez Gonzalez as a symbol to represent hope and humanity. There is also his iconic Andre the Giant design in a star which is how you can identify any Shepard Fairey piece.
This mural represents the Latin community to emphasize how we have become a united and empowered community. Mendoza wanted to include the troubled past of the Latin community on one side of the building as well as how we have evolved as a community in the city of Los Angeles on the other side. The bridge is meant to represent healing from past to present. The bridge used in the mural is the lotus bridge which is an important landmark in Los Angeles.
PHASE 3: CRITICAL ANALYSIS
Many artworks I notice around the Silver Lake through the Echo Park area, are based on Latin American communities. They are bringing to light the historical struggles the Latin community has faced and is still facing today. Hollywood is the perfect area to display Latin based artworks since most of the population is made up of Hispanic people. Especially during this time where the Latin community is facing immigration raids by unidentified individuals. It’s important to share their stories no matter how graphic it may be.
PHASE 4: PROPOSAL
While walking through Silver Lake, I saw a lot of graffiti however not many murals. In the past, when I would walk around Silverlake I would see many murals and the streets were filled with color. Now I see mostly graffiti painted over walls, sometimes even covering other art. I would suggest that the city should provide more public places for murals. Such as walls, billboards, and art galleries. Especially, considering how most upcoming artists need to personally fund themselves in order to place art in public spaces. I also think hosting petitions for the community to sign, requesting that the city should fund public art they want around their community.
